Chapter Seven

Brayden rubbed his sleepy eyes and stood, pulling Lily up with him. “What do you mean, ‘missing’?” The fear in Lily’s eyes made his breath hitch.

“I woke about fifteen minutes ago. When I went upstairs to go to the bathroom, I noticed her bed hadn’t been slept in. Her room is undisturbed. She didn’t come home last night, and Carmen always comes home.”

“Maybe she decided to visit a friend?” he suggested, trying to make sense of her panic.

Lily shook her head. “No, she always told me she’d rather sleep in her own backyard under the stars than sleep in someone else’s slept-in bed. The only reason she stayed at my place last year when her kitchen flooded was because the mattress in my spare room was brand new; she helped me pick it out.”

The rising anxiety in Lily’s voice kicked him into protector mode. “Okay, here’s what we’re going to do: first, let’s check our phones, and I’ll see if her car is in the carport, then we’ll go from there.”

Lily’s eyes widened, and she slipped around the couch to fetch her bag. “Of course. She probably rang and left a message while we were sleeping. I should have checked my phone first, before waking you.”

“No problem.” Brayden checked his phone, too, and his gut plummeted - no messages or missed calls. He pulled the curtain back, revealing an empty carport. Turning back to Lily, he asked, “Any luck?”

“No,” Lily groaned, throwing her phone back in her bag. “Oh my God, something terrible has happened. I’ll never forgive myself if Carmen is hurt because of my stupidity.”

Brayden’s brow furrowed. “What on earth are you talking about?”

“That damned necklace, that’s what. I know curses aren’t real, but it sure as hell feels like it right now.”

Squashing down the churning in his stomach, Brayden moved to Lily, his arms encasing her jittery body. She stiffened in his embrace, but he stood patiently, waiting for her to relax and surrender to his hold. “Thinking like that is not going to get us anywhere. We know she was at the library last night. Have you got your set of keys with you?”

“No, but I know where Carmen keeps the spare set.”

“Great, you grab them, and I’ll warm up the car - we’ll start there.”

Lily surprised him by sealing her soft lips over his in a delicate kiss. “Thank you.”

“She has to be there, she just has to be,” Lily mumbled as they headed toward the town library. Her frayed nerves had her jumping out of her skin. Only Brayden had kept her from having a total freak out back at the house.

“Hey, you alright?” he asked, reaching over and threading her hand in his. “Everything’s going to be okay.”

“I hope you’re right.” She paused, her gaze spotting Carmen’s blue Mazda 3, still parked where she’d driven up yesterday morning. “Oh my God - she’s still here. What if she’s had an accident inside and couldn’t get to the phone? Maybe she fell down
